Lapsley to skeptical music execs: 'I did everything myself'
Holly Lapsley Fletcher's debut LP is so good that music industry reps assumed she couldn't have done it alone. "Is there a guy behind it?" the U.K. artist — who goes simply by Låpsley — recalls one person asking.
"They didn't believe it was me. I found that quite offensive," says the 19-year-old singer, songwriter, musician and producer.
Låpsley's interest in electronic music began in her early teens, as she told her parents she was going to bed, but snuck out to warehouse raves. She recalls straying far from her peer group as young as 14, hoping to meet people interested in the experimental SoundCloud accounts she followed.
Låpsley already has a developed and powerful voice, solid writing, and clean production, all showcased in her fresh-released debut LP Long Way Home. She joins Shad in studio q to play from the album and discuss the strange transition from writing personal songs in your bedroom to performing them on stage.
