One year ago today, the offices of Charlie Hebdo were attacked. Two gunmen burst into the French satirical magazine's Paris offices and killed twelve people, including editor Stephane Charbonnier.

Now, for the first time in English, an essay Charbonnier completed just two days before his death is being published as a posthumous manifesto.

Open Letter: On Blasphemy, Islamophobia, and the True Enemies of Free Expression speaks to the very issues at the heart of the attack. New Yorker magazine staff writer Adam Gopnik, who wrote the foreword introducing the text, joins guest host Rachel Giese to discuss it.
