Q

Why theatres are literally shaking up the movie-watching experience

Will movie theatres vying to attract younger audiences alienate older folks?

New York Times journalist Brooks Barnes joins guest host Wab Kinew to discuss how some movie theatres are shaking, spraying and otherwise stimulating audiences in an attempt to attract a younger demographic.

Brooks explains that 4DX theatres are the industry's latest weapon in the big screen's losing battle against a plethora of smaller screens -- especially when it comes to smartphone-touting teens and 20-somethings.

The critic walks through a list of new sensations -- strobe lighting, smoke effects, odours, bubbles, back vibrations and leg ticklers -- and shares why older or more traditional movie lovers may want to avert their eyes.

This 4DX promotional video says motion chairs and atmospheric effects are the future of the movie industry. Do you think they're onto something?
