Muholi is the founder of the media organization Inkanyiso, and has dedicated years of her life to documenting the lives of LGBT people -- including speaking out against horrifying hate crimes such as so-called "curative rapes".

They're not subjects; they're participants

Muholi's work does not only portray the horrors faced by gays and lesbians. In Faces and Phases, her acclaimed portrait series featuring black lesbians, her subjects confront the camera with arresting calm and silent dignity.
