John Cale makes rare return to the past for M:FANS

John Cale, one of the most original figures in modern rock, joins guest host Tom Power to discuss his new record M:FANS. The project samples and expands on his 1982 album, Music For a New Society. 

The musician, writer, and producer — best known as the co-founder of the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed — has an eclectic resume. He played viola with some of the great modern classical composers of the 20th century. He produced landmark albums by The Stooges and Patti Smith. He even mixed a record by Barbra Streisand.

Today he explains his impulse to go back to the past, a rarity for him, and why the recent death of Lou Reed knocked him off his creative path — even though their relationship had been rocky.
