Why is the U.A.E jailing satirists? Q debate on e-cigarettes Best of Q: Vince August
Please note: Jian is off until January 13 and Terry O'Reilly will be filling in for the week of January 6. Here's what we have on tap for you today:
- Why American comics are defending Shezanne "Shez" Cassim, an American being imprisoned for over a year in the United Arab Emirates, for uploading a mildly satirical sketch.
- The debate over e-cigarettes is raging: Are they a non-offensive way of smoking around others? An effective way of quitting entirely? Or does their growing popularity jeopardize the hard work that's gone into discouraging smoking culture? Terry moderates a Q debate between deputy editor of the Canadian Medical Association Journal Dr. Matthew Stanbrook, who argues against the e-cigarette and Columbia University professor Amy Fairchild, who argues for greater tolerance.
- And from the Best of Q, Jian's conversation with Vince August, a New Jersey judge whose sideline as a stand-up comedian has put him in professional hot water.
About the guest host: An acclaimed marketing man, Terry O'Reilly is known by CBC radio listeners for the acclaimed show Age of Persuasion, and its follow-up Under the Influence. O'Reilly has also gained notoriety for his live seminars and his book The Age of Persuasion: How Marketing Ate Our Culture.
This isn't the first time Terry has filled in for Jian. You may have caught his interview with "Confessions of a Sociopath" author M.E. Thomas, longtime activist Ralph Nader, or Thomas Frank on Mad Men.
