q's sports culture panel thinks beyond the play-by-play to weigh in on the societal impact of sports stories. Not a fan? Not a problem. Our panel watches much more than the scoreboard.

Shad checks in with journalists Dave Zirin, Morgan Campbell, and Sonali Karnick. Today:

  • The Colin Kaepernick saga continues. 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been sitting and kneeling during the playing of the U.S. national anthem — and now it seems his silent protest against police violence is spreading. "This story is not going away, and more athletes are getting on board," says Karnick.

  • The World Cup of Hockey.  There's been a marketing blitz for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey here in Toronto — but most still don't know (or care) what the heck it is. Campbell doubts that hockey is international enough to hold a candle to its soccer world and Olympic equivalents.
