Justin Rutledge on making an "unabashedly pretty" album
"I just wanna be unsettled."
It was easy for Justin Rutledge leave hometown Toronto behind in search of something new. The city he grew up just didn't speak to him anymore.
"The place that you live... you should give to it and it should give back to you," he says.
The musician's new album, East — inspired by the direction of his journey, acts as a travel diary chronicling his physical and personal transformation on his quest for a new homestead and head space.
Out in Halifax the alt-country singer found himself spending full days in the recording studio. Now living in Ontario's Prince Edward County, Rutledge spends most days sitting on a dock with a coffee in hand. The change of scenery has been a boon to his music, and his personal development.
"There's really little to no darkness on this record. It's about change," he says. "I just wanted to make something simple and pretty."
He joins guest host Candy Palmater in studio q to preview tracks off of his soulful, lush and "unabashedly pretty" album which dropped today.
