Why this stupid hackathon is purposely building bad ideas

There are a lot of stupid ideas in the world — and a new tech conference coming to Canada wants to purposely generate even more of them.

There are a lot of stupid ideas in the world — and a new tech conference coming to Canada wants to purposely generate even more of them.

Tom Hobson and Sam Lavigne join Shad to discuss the Stupid Sh-- No One Needs & Terrible Ideas Hackathon — a cheeky event that started in New York and is now making its way to Toronto. The pair explain why hackathon culture is ripe for satire, and what qualifies as a perfectly stupid hack.

"When you produce something that has no value on purpose, what you're really creating is a critique," says Lavigne.

The pair list their favourite pointless innovations — from an app that helps you automatically delete your financially challenged friends to a zipper that makes it easier to access your banana — and why it's important that the bad ideas are actually built.
