Kate Mulgrew: "We all carry our suffering too much inside"

You may know her as Captain Kathryn Janeway or Galina "Red" Reznikov, but now Kate Mulgrew wants you to meet the woman behind the roles.

Perhaps you know Kate Mulgrew as Kathryn Janeway, the first female captain in the history of the Star Trek franchise. Or maybe you met her as prison cook Galina "Red" Reznikov in Orange is the New Black.

Either way, the seasoned actress would like to introduce you to her most interesting character: herself.

Mulgrew joins Friday guest host Tom Power to discuss her new memoir, Born With Teeth, and why she's splitting open her personal life for all to see. In a generous, open-hearted conversation, she reflects on everything from surviving a violent sexual assault to giving up a baby for adoption.

"We all carry our suffering too much inside. It's such a brief moment, life ... I think the one thing we have to do is stand up to one another and say: 'This is how I've suffered. This is how I've loved. This is who I've become, and this is why," she tells Tom.

"Because maybe holding that hand out is going to help a little bit."
