Ryan Gosling and Denis Villeneuve lead Canadian Oscar noms

Actor Ryan Gosling and director Denis Villeneuve are leading the Canadian contingent at the 89th Academy Awards. Gosling, originally from London, Ont., was nominated for best actor in his La La Land role as a jazz musician. The film picked up 14 nominations overall, tying Titanic and All About Eve for the most Academy Award nominations handed out to a film.

Gosling's co-star Emma Stone earned a nomination for best actress and there were many musical nominations for the film, including Justin Hurwitz in the original score category.

Arrival, filmed in Montreal, earned eight nods, including a best director nomination for Villeneuve as well as recognition in the best picture category.

Other members of Villeneuve's Quebec film crew picked up nominations for production design, set decoration, sound mixing and sound editing.

Gosling and Villeneuve will be teaming up together later this year when the long-awaited sequel to Blade Runner is released in October.

Other Canadian content that received recognition was Blind Vaysha from the National Film Board of Canada, nominated in the animated short category.

"How Far I'll Go" from the animated film Moana is nominated in the best original song category and while the Oscar nomination goes to its writer, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, the song was performed by Brampton, Ont. singer Alessia Cara.
