Why David Simon and George Pelecanos exposed the porn industry in The Deuce

David Simon is known for creating and producing some of the most critically acclaimed televison of all time. In addition to the highly influential series The Wire, Simon has been behind shows like Homicide: Life on the Street and Treme, to name a few, that expose unheard, overlooked and often gritty stories of Amercan life.

One of Simon's collaborators has been crime writer George Pelecanos who worked on The Wire and Treme. The duo have reunited for The Deuce, a new HBO series set in 1970s New York.

True to Simon's track record, The Deuce — slang for New York's 42nd Street — explores New York's booming sex trade and how it became the hub for the U.S. porn industry. The show, which premiered on Sept. 10, stars James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
