Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever became real-life roommates to kick-start their chemistry in Booksmart

If you want to talk about gender imbalance, look no further than the Hollywood buddy comedy. The genre, known for films like Dumb and Dumber and Superbad, features few examples of female friendships — though that number is rising.

A new movie called Booksmart follows two best friends and academic overachievers, Molly (played by Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (played by Kaitlyn Dever). They've spent their time in high school focusing on their grades, believing that this would give them a leg up over their party-minded peers. But on the eve of their graduation, the best friends realize that they may have missed out, so they decide to cram four years of lost fun into one crazy night.

The two stars of the film, Feldstein and Dever, joined host Tom Power live in the q studio to talk about the new buddy comedy in which all the punchlines and hijinks belong to young women.

"This movie isn't necessarily a coming-of-age teen girl comedy," said Dever. "These girls know themselves. They know exactly who they are and they are very self-aware. It's a movie [about the] discovery of the people around them."

Booksmart hits theatres today.
