How Kyle Mooney's Brigsby Bear searches for truth in nostalgia

Kyle Mooney's love of '80s nostalgia and children's entertainment fuelled the idea for his first feature film Brigsby Bear, but it's not a new movie for kids. Instead, the film by the Saturday Night Live cast member has much more in common with The Truman Show. In that film, Jim Carrey plays a man who discovers his whole life is a lie and that his every movement has been broadcast on television to millions of people.

Mooney's Brigsby Bear shows how art and entertainment can make us feel connected to the world and a collective experience because, despite being kidnapped and lied to his whole life, the betrayal Mooney's character is most upset about is that his favourite show Brigsby Bear Adventures is "fake" and that no one else got to enjoy it.

Mooney speaks with Ali Hassan about Brigsby Bear, which will arrive in movie theatres on August 4th.
