Not sidekicks or trophies: Patricia Rozema on actors who are agents
Canadian filmmaker Patricia Rozema on what she learned from self-realized actors, including Sandra Oh, Andrea Martin, Ellen Page and Tatiana Maslany.
Celebrated Canadian filmmaker Patricia Rozema is the subject of a new Barry Avrich-directed HBO documentary called The Women Who Act With Patricia Rozema.
The film features a series of conversations between Rozema and the "handful of women" who can be highly selective about the acting roles they accept, including Sandra Oh, Andrea Martin, Ellen Page and Tatiana Maslany.
Today the filmmaker sits down with guest host Rachel Giese to discuss the importance of strong, self-realized female characters, why openness is a muscle that must be developed, and the dearth of complex female protagonists, especially beyond a certain age.
