Stella Meghie shares the real-life inspiration behind her multi-generational love story The Photograph

Up until a few years ago, Stella Meghie was working as a fashion publicist in New York, but she did something people only dream about — she quit. 

From that point on, Meghie started studying screenwriting and has since become an unstoppable force in the film industry. Her debut film, Jean of the Joneses, was a big hit, and when she directed her second film in 2017, she was the only black woman with a movie in wide release.

Meghie's latest film, The Photograph, hits theatres today. It's a romantic drama about a famed photographer who dies unexpectedly, leaving her estranged daughter, Mae, hurt, angry and full of questions. When Mae finds a photograph tucked away in a safe-deposit box, she finds herself delving into her mother's early life — an investigation that leads to an unexpected romance with a rising journalist.

Meghie joined guest host Laurie Brown in the q studio to talk about the real-life inspiration behind the film and why she decided to follow her heart into screenwriting.
