'He was a real pioneer': comedian Andy Kindler on the legacy of Don Rickles
Yesterday, comedian Don Rickles died at the age of 90.
This was a huge loss for the comedy world. As Andy Kindler notes, "He was a real pioneer."
Kindler, a comic who grew up on the comedy of Rickles, remembers the star's memorable late-night appearances and says his strength lay in his ability to go off script and work a crowd.
But, Kindler also isn't afraid to admit that even one of his favourite comedians in the world can make mistakes or tell some bad jokes every now and then. When asked about Rickles' past jokes about race or other insensitive topics, Kindler called them a "terrible blind spot," but adds, "I don't think, in his heart, he had a mean bone in his body."
Hear more from Kindler on today's show and tune in to hear how his dad has a secret connection to Rickles.
