Maybe you read them as a child, maybe you read them to your own kids, or maybe you've only seen them in the dentist's waiting room or the children's section in the bookstore. With their shiny golden spine and hard covers illustrated with everything from The Little Mermaid to Jonny Appleseed, these iconic books are hard to miss.

The Little Golden Books series began publishing in 1942 and have remained a classic in children's literature since. To date, the franchise has sold two billion copies of stories ranging from The Poky Little Puppy to Seseme Street. This year, Little Golden Books turns 75.

In this edition of the q Origin Story we hear from author Leonard Marcus on how it all began.
