5 things to know about the new q

As Tom Power takes the reins at q, here are some changes listeners can expect.

For weeks, the q crew has been hard at work preparing a new show for you and in a few days, we can finally show you the fruits of our labour. But what does the new q entail? Below, we've laid out the five biggest changes you may notice on the show:  

Our new host is Tom Power: You may already know Tom from his days hosting Deep Roots, Radio 2 Morning and guest hosting q. As a musician and broadcaster, he blends a warm curiosity and playful wit to cover the arts, music and entertainment stories you're talking about, and the ones that are too interesting not to share. 

The new show officially launches Oct. 24: Mark your calendars and make sure to tune in on Monday morning!

We're getting a bit of a makeover: We're polishing up with a new colour scheme, new banners, new on-air features, and we're mixing up the format a bit to create a new sound for you. A big part of that is a brand new theme song written by two members of a popular Canadian band. We won't spoil the surprise for you just yet — you'll have to tune in Monday! But feel free to send us your guess as to who wrote it over at @cbcradioq. 

We've joined the CBC Music family: What does this mean? Well, there will be more of a focus on music, alongside arts and entertainment. And you can expect more collaborations — on air and online — with the CBC Music crew, who brought you the live broadcast and stream of The Tragically Hip concert in Kingston, Ontario, this summer. Also, we've begun recording our musical performances in a shiny new (for us) studio that we share with CBC Music — and that delivers even better sound. 

It's gonna be a rip roarin' good time: We've been hard at work building a great lineup for you and we're super excited for you to hear it. We've got electronic music sensation A Tribe Called Red; pop duo Tegan and Sara; actor Gael Garcia Bernal; comedians Norm Macdonald and Mike Myers; Phil Collins looking back on his 45+ years in the music biz; author Katherena Vermette; and Adam Cohen talking about what it's like to work with his dad (that would be music legend Leonard Cohen). Plus, we have a new roster of contributors, and you won't want to miss our new features like Q Origin Story where we explore the unlikely beginnings of everything from Pepe the Frog to Auto-Tune.
