New and Notable Podcasts: June 2021 Edition
Need something to binge as you soak up the official start of summer? Our New and Notable playlist for June is full of what we might call certified bangers. Expect powerful stories, twisting and turning mysteries and even some cringeworthy questions.
First, our host Elamin Abdelmahmoud is joined by Rosemary Green, host of Life Jolt, a new CBC podcast that looks at what Canada's prison system is like for women. Rosemary has firsthand experience — she spent five years as an inmate. She shares powerful moments from the making of the show, and why she decided to share her story.
Then, Do You Know Mordechai? tells the bizarre tale of a man who built himself a larger-than-life backstory based entirely on lies, and how it all came crashing down.
Later, Inappropriate Questions covers the kinds of questions you might want to ask but probably shouldn't. One of the co-hosts (and our digital producer) Elena Hudgins Lyle tells Elamin all about the new third season.
Podcasts featured this week:
Life Jolt: "Grand Valley Institution is the federal penitentiary for women in Ontario, and it's where first time prisoners Diana and Emily will serve their time. It's where they learn the ropes of prison life and begin personal reckonings about the paths and choices that brought them here."
Do You Know Mordechai?: "Kathleen Goldhar was so happy her friend Arya had found someone great after a bad divorce and a year of disheartening online dating. But it turns out Mordechai Horowitz was just too good to be true."
Inappropriate Questions: "Not every amputee has a shocking story behind their amputation, and those who do don't always want to talk about it. When your experience is a visible part of you, people often ask about it. Elena and Harv talk with musician Julianna Romanyk about her first day of school speech as a congenital amputee. Then, comedian Courtney Gilmour shares her thoughts on "inspiration porn" and how cab drivers inspire some of her comedy."
