In 1619, a privateer ship called the White Lion arrived in the English colony of Virginia carrying more than 20 enslaved Africans. This fateful trip ultimately changed America, shaping the country's history and identity as we know it today.
On the 400th anniversary of this consequential moment, 1619's host Nikole Hannah-Jones explores the long, harrowing history of American slavery and the shadow it left behind.
