Nana aba Duncan, Hannah Sung and Garvia Bailey on starting a business with friends
Have you ever dreamed of venturing out and starting a company with your friends? Something that lets you be creative and really play to your strengths? The team behind Media Girlfriends did just that.
It began in 2016 as a podcast hosted by Nana aba Duncan. Nana aba is a journalist, professor, and CBC host (you may remember her from a little show called Podcast Playlist).
In each episode of the Media Girlfriends podcast Nana aba speaks with other women working in media. Conversations ranged from imposter syndrome to Beyoncé's work ethic. Then in 2019 the show evolved into a podcast production company, with co-founders Garvia Bailey and Hannah Sung.
Hannah Sung is a journalist and producer. She has produced podcasts for the Globe & Mail, TVO and the Walrus Lab (and some of us grew up watching her on Much Music).
Garvia Bailey is a journalist and producer, and former host and columnist for CBC and JazzFM.
This week, they join Leah to talk about the joys of working with good friends and share some of the podcasts they love.
Humans of the House - "Former MPs tell us how they were treated on the job, both inside and beyond the House of Commons. How did they navigate the extreme workloads and all the pressure? And when you're in such a huge job, where can you turn for support?"
You Didn't See Nothin - "Part investigation and part memoir, You Didn't See Nothin follows Yohance Lacour as he revisits the story that introduced him to the world of investigative journalism, and examines how its ripple effects have shaped his life over the past quarter-century."
Authentic: The Story of Tablo - "Korean hip hop star Tablo was at the height of his career when a rumour started spreading on the internet that he was a liar. As a trivial accusation explodes into an international obsession, host Dexter Thomas Jr. follows a bizarre conspiracy that asks one fundamental question: are we who we say we are?"
Shameless Acquisition Target - "After years of seeing friends (and some enemies) get rich, rich, rich selling their shows and companies to other bigger shows and bigger companies, longtime podcast executive Laura Mayer has decided to get hers."
