In their latest season, The Dream looks into life coaches. They sell promises of prosperity, health and happiness. But do coaches actually help you achieve your goals?

That's the question at the heart of Season 3 of The Dream.

Having tackled pyramid schemes and the world of wellness, coaching seemed like an obvious topic to explore next. Host and creator Jane Marie says that in many ways coaching combines tactics used to sell products in both the multi-level-marketing and wellness industries.

This week, Leah and Jane sit down to talk about the show and Jane's upcoming book Selling the Dream: The Billion Dollar Industry Bankrupting Americans. Plus, we'll listen to some of Jane's favourite podcasts.

The Dream: "After setting out to debunk multi-level marketing and wellness fads in previous seasons, in season 3 The Dream is taking a hard look at the life coach industry. In this episode we meet Jennifer Rajala, who got sucked into the MLM-to-coaching pipeline."

This American Life: "Out for a simple pleasure cruise with two friends, Alex Zharov was planning to see Jamaica Bay in New York City. But this end-of-the-day excursion, which should have only lasted 40 minutes, turns into an out-of-control adventure that left him lost, stranded, and bleeding...all within sight of the Empire State Building."

My Year in Mensa: "Jamie Loftus takes you through her year in the high-IQ Mensa society, from taking the test as a joke to spending the Fourth of July with 2000 angry Mensans in Phoenix. Chaos reigns, but at least it tests well."

Where Should We Begin? with Esther Perel: "A young family, a ten-year age difference, and a wife who used an extra-marital relationship to find independence. After an affair, the choice to forgive and rebuild doesn't wipe away the pain and the betrayal. Esther guides this couple on their path towards reconciliation and trust a year after the discovery."
