Out In The Open

One café's endeavor to redefine Yellowknife's abandoned downtown

It starts with the coffee shops.
The Fat Fox is just down the street from the legendary Gold Range Hotel, arguably the most fabled tavern in Canada's north. (Janna Graham)

The roughest street in downtown Yellowknife is a getting new café.

With its beautifully decorated pastries and chalkboard 'soup of the day' signs, the Fat Fox Café is a far cry from the fistfights, public intoxication and rowdiness common to 50th street. Many avoid this area in Yellowknife, but this coffee shop hopes to spread the strong sense of community felt by downtown locals.
