Other People's Problems

Lacey: Healing from a neglectful mother

Lacey has always had a hard time experiencing joy and other positive emotions, but recently there’s been slight shifts in her thinking. As she learns to create a safe environment where she’s seen and loved, Lacey must also come to terms with the anger, shame and resentment she’s been holding on to.

"It's like I'm sitting at the top of the stairs with my sister, and we're supposed to be in bed, and there's lots of yelling and fighting downstairs between my parents." - Lacey

Growing up, there was a lot of conflict in Lacey's family. After her parents divorced, the conflict stopped, but Lacey and her sister were often left alone. By connecting with her younger self, Lacey realises what she was missing: being seen and loved just as she is. Now, Lacey is doing her best to let go of the childhood patterns — the shield — that once protected her, in hopes of creating healthier ways of being for herself and her children.

Listen for:

  • How important it is for Lacey to be able to find comfort in uncomfortable feelings and sensations in her body. Hillary redirects Lacey's attention away from the "story" about what happened, and back toward the feeling over and over again throughout this episode.
  • How hard Lacey has to work to allow herself to experience Hillary's delight in her.
  • How Hillary takes Lacey through a journey through her past to try to heal the pain she still carries from her childhood. It's called "Lifespan Integration."
