"Sometimes the shame spiral goes so deep that...we can't take in the information that someone is giving us right in that moment that says we're loved." - Hillary

Shame keeps Dave from connecting with other people. He finds a way to reach toward Hillary.

Listen for:

  • Shame makes Dave feel like he can't even be seen in the world. For example, going upstairs in his home to fill his water bottle can feel threatening.
  • Dave is ashamed about feeling that much shame. It's a shame spiral.
  • Hillary encourages Dave to feel anger because it moves him from being defeated and withdrawn to having some passion.
