Lisa Kisch of Toronto had always dreamed of living abroad. When her mother passed away last year, she decided it was time to do it.

"All of a sudden you look around and nothing's really important that's material," she reflected.

In January, Kisch, her husband Quillan Nagel and their two daughters Lily, 8 and Audrey, 10, headed to Mexico. Also on the itinerary are the U.S. Virgin Islands, England, Spain, Turkey, Israel, Italy and Croatia.

We caught up with Kisch in Lisbon, Portugal to get her three top tips for other families considering a similar adventure.

1.  Research parenting and homeschooling groups where you're going.
For Kisch and her family, homeschooling was the easiest thing to do while on the road, rather than enrolling their daughters into schools.

"One of the best things you can do is research mommy groups online wherever you go," she explained. "I just went on Facebook and I literally typed in 'Kids in Mérida' and there's a whole Facebook group called 'Kids in Mérida.'"

2. Stay long enough to really experience living somewhere.
Kisch's original idea was to live in six cities in six months but she soon realized there weren't enough months to see all the places on their list.

"Pick someplace where you can really sit down and live and be part of a community."

Two of the sites she went to to find places to live were Home Exchange and Sabbatical Homes.

3.  Try to find ways to make money from a distance.

The Kisch family rented out their home in Toronto and their cottage in order to offset accommodation costs while travelling. She also carved out time while away to keep up with her online marketing business

"There are lots of businesses you can do online," she pointed out. "There are lots of ways that you can be creative about making a living."

"You also have to think about the things you spend your money on, on a day-to-day basis," she emphasized.

"We're travelling with one suitcase and four carry-ons."
