Why Meghan Markle has a better shot than Harry at permanent residency in Canada
'Harry doesn't quite fit the bill,' says immigration lawyer Richard Kurland
Meghan Markle may be a strong candidate to become a permanent resident in Canada, but as for her husband, Prince Harry, the cards are not in his favour, according to one immigration lawyer.
"Meghan presents the better immigration opportunity for this family," said Richard Kurland who practices in Vancouver.
Queen Elizabeth confirmed on Monday that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will divide their time between Canada and the U.K., following their announcement to "step back" from royal duties earlier this month.
Markle lived and worked in Toronto for several years while filming the American television drama, Suits.
"She qualifies as an artistic cultural worker in the self-employed category," said Kurland. "The process is going to require 18 to 36 months, but at the end, both she, her husband and their child would be entitled to permanent residence in Canada."
According to Kurland, Harry's immigration case isn't as promising, however. "He doesn't have Canadian education. He does not have Canadian work experience," he said.
"His age is a factor. Our Canadian system rewards people in their 20s and Harry's ship has sailed past that line."
