Battling wildfires, South African crews inspire teamwork with song
Wildfires scorched areas of Western Canada this summer, fuelled by abnormally high temperatures and dry conditions. This week's wildfire in British Columbia's Rock Creek destroyed at least 30 homes and 15 other buildings. Evacuation orders affecting more that 130 properties were lifted on Wednesday.
There are still over over 200 wildfires burning in B.C. and Alberta, and with very high temperatures expected this fall, there's not much relief in sight. But over the past few months, some relief came when firefighters from around the world touched down to lend a hand, including crews from South Africa. And they brought more than their skills at fighting wildfires. South African firefighter Constance Mavuso and Alberta firefighter Barry Shellian share their thoughts on the crews' musical legacy with producer Sarah Meehan-Sirk.
