Day 6 encore: Hitler's plans to make Edward a puppet king
Edward VIII abdicated the British throne as the imperial ambitions of the Nazis rose across Europe. To Hitler, the one-time King looked to be a very valuable pawn. And, according to Andrew Morton's book "17 Carnations," the Nazis might have seemed to be a way back to the throne for Edward.
Over the past week, Edward's connections to Germany made headlines when a never-before-seen film clip from 1933 was published by UK tabloid The Sun. It appears to show The Queen Mother and Edward performing the stiff-armed Nazi salute along with a young girl, maybe six or seven years old. That young girl is Edward's niece, Princess Elizabeth - who, of course, grew up to become the current Queen.
Morton delves deep into the Duke of Windsor's dalliances with the Third Reich in his book, "17 Carnations: The Royals, The Nazis and the Biggest Cover-up in History". He spoke to Brent Bambury earlier this year.
