Caitlyn Jenner and the realities of transgender parenting
Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, made her first public appearance as the cover-girl of Vanity Fair this week. It's a radical re-invention for Jenner, who rose to fame in the 1970's as a gold-winning Olympian and more recently as the reality-tv stepfather to one the most famous families in the world, The Kardashians. During an interview with Diane Sawyer less than two months ago, Jenner talked about breaking the news to his five children and four step-children, saying they could always use the term "dad".
But what's it like to be a transgender parent, or the child of one, away from the glare of Hollywood? This week on Day 6, three guests discuss that question. S. Bear Bergman is a transgender activist with three kids, Meggan Sommerville is a transgender blogger with two children, and filmmaker Sharon Shattuck tells the story of her transgender parent Trisha in her documentary, From This Day Forward. You can also check out this award-winning CBC radio documentary about the birth of S. Bear Bergman's child Stanley, produced by Kristin Nelson at The Current.
