It was a sombre week for the Edmonton police. Quanto the police dog - a German shepherd with four years of decorated experience - died on Monday. He was killed when he and his handler tried to take down a man who had fled from a car with stolen plates. Quanto's death has sparked calls for a special federal law that would increase penalties for injuring or killing a police animal. Acting Staff-Sergeant Troy Carriere of the Edmonton Police Canine Unit joins Brent to explain the proposal. But not everyone supports giving police dogs an elevated status under the law. Doug King, a lawyer at Pivot Legal, is the head author of a forthcoming report on the use of police dogs. He spoke to Day 6 about the ethical concerns surrounding the issue.
