Five years after the legalization of cannabis in Canada, public health experts are starting to see trends in the data.
A recent Canadian Medical Association Journal commentary surveyed outcomes and found some social benefits, including significant reductions in arrests and charges related to cannabis use. That said trends related to hospitalization, use and incidents of impaired driving have either remained steady or increased, which raises concerns among some public health experts.
Legalization also has not been the economic boom that some companies expected. There is a viable industry, but many of the biggest companies in the legal cannabis market have had to lay off thousands of employees and some smaller retails have gone bankrupt.
