Tim Schmalz on honouring Fort Mac firefighters with his art
A Canadian sculptor's work has taken on deeper meaning. Weeks before the wild fires ripped through Fort McMurray, Alberta, he was commissioned to create a monument to the town's firefighters.
It's been an exciting year for sculptor Tim Schmalz of St.Jacob's, Ontario. One of his sculptures—the Homeless Jesus— was installed inside the Vatican. Another sculpture of his will soon be installed inside Cathedral of Saint Peter in Chains, also in Rome.
But it's a sculpture that he was recently commissioned to do that's causing him to reflect on the meaning of his work in a way he never has before. Weeks before the wild fires ripped through Fort McMurray, Alberta, he was commissioned to create a monument to the town's firefighters.
