Slapshot is a massive, stainless steel homage to Canada's game. Mike Camp, the artist who created the piece, has put it up for sale. Now, the statue stands in the middle of nowhere - accessible only by canoe or snowshoe. No problem. The artist will deliver to the buyer.
Inspired by the giant puck at Kirkland Lake's hockey museum, Camp tells Carol he spent more than one thousand hours and thousands of dollars on materials for Slapshot.
'I started in January, so everything had to come in by snowshoe and toboggan.'
Camp chose to create his statue in the vast wilderness at his cabin, instead of his small home studio. He estimates he hauled 320 kilograms of steel through the northern Ontario wilderness for his project. His material of choice is 18 gauge stainless steel.
The artist is no stranger to large scale sculpture; previous projects include a six metre buffalo, a 4.5 metre Inukshuk in the town of The Pas, Manitoba, and a massive fish near Marten River, Ontario.
Camp says he could see the piece finding a home at an arena or a hockey equipment manufacturer.
'One canoe would actually carry it, but it would be pretty tippy.'
As for moving it from the wilderness? Simple, Camp tells Carol, without pause. He's confident he can transport the large piece by canoe. That's how he transported the building materials. In the case of Slapshot he'll use two canoes.
With no buyers at this point, Mr. Camp is entertaining all offers. delivery included.
'If the Prime Minister makes me a reasonable offer, not only will I deliver it, I'll vote for him.'
