"The first thing that comes to mind is that anxiety and the fear I had towards him when I was a kid."

That's what Nate Phelps, the estranged son of the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps, says when he's asked whether he'd visit his father, who is near death in a Kansas hospice.
Nate Phelps, a Calgary-based LGBT-rights advocate , announced on Facebook this week that his father, notorious for holding up homophobic and hateful signs at funerals, is dying.

In a candid and thoughtful interview, Nate Phelps tells Carol how he ran from his family when he turned 18, and has dedicated his life to being an advocate against religious indoctrination, child abuse, and homophobia.

Yet he admits that while he can't forgive his father, he is conflicted about his imminent passing.
