A year ago today, an unearthly hum was terrorizing the streets of Manchester, England. Well, "terrorizing"'s a little strong. "Worry-izing", maybe, or "irritation-izing." At the time, Twitter was peppered with questions: is anyone else hearing this? Is it evil? And what exactly is it? The answers were: yes, other people were hearing it; no, it's not necessarily evil; and ask Trevor Cox.

Cox is a Professor of Acoustic Engineering at the University of Salford, just outside Manchester. And he was familiar with the sound in Manchester. He describes it, and many others, in The Sound Book: The Science of the Sonic Wonders of the World and in this encore presentation of his interview with As It Happens host Carol Off.
