Vermont artist can print "Eat More Kale" t-shirts after Chick-fil-A fight
He stood up for kale -- and won. For three years, Vermont folk artist Bo Muller-Moore has been fighting for the right to make t-shirts printed with the slogan "Eat More Kale."
Muller-Moore has actually been making the shirts for more than a decade, but when he tried to trademark the phrase, a legal challenge came from an unexpected place. The restaurant chain Chick-fil-A sent Muller-Moore a cease and desist order telling him to stop using the slogan, and destroy all his merchandise.
They sell nine thousand chicken sandwiches per minute, while I'm lucky if I sell fifteen t-shirts on a good day.
The company alledged the phrase was too similar to Chick-fil-A's slogal "Eat Mor Chickin" -- mis-spelled because it's attributed in ad campaigns to cows trying to save their own hides. Last week, Muller-Moore finally won. The tradmark office granted his application to protect his phrase "Eat More Kale."
With all the publicity, Muller-Moore's tshirts are more popular than ever. "I've had a good weekend. I'm going to be busy for the next three weeks."
