Gay-straight alliance student Evan Wiens wins $70k university scholarship
Evan Wiens spent his high school years fighting for gay student rights and fighting against bullying. Last year, he was at the centre of a heated controversy about promoting a gay-straight alliance at his high school, Steinbach Regional Secondary. He eventually won that battle, and now he's been awarded the TD Community Leadership Scholarship, worth up to $70,000 in post-secondary tuition and living expenses.
"I'm really thankful to TD for selecting me as one of 20 recipients out of over 3,500 that had applied... [the money] will definitely take a load off for sure," Mr. Wiens tells As It Happens.
In the fall, he will study political science at the University of Winnipeg and is considering transferring to either a Vancouver-based university or Montreal's McGill in his second year.
