For sale: Hillary Clinton's sweet ride, a 1986 Oldsmobile
A former White House staffer is selling the last car Hillary Clinton ever owned — a car he won in an auction shortly before the Clintons left the White House.
The 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass was owned by the couple while Bill was Governor of Arkansas.
[My daughter] said, 'It looks like an old lady's car!'-Mike Lawn, owner fo Hillary Clinton's old 1986 Oldsmobile
"You have to remember, they were living at the governor's mansion in Arkansas at the time, so they brought everything they owned to the White House," Mike Lawn tells As It Happens guest host Laura Lynch.
For eight years, it sat on the south lawn of the White House. Newspaper reports from 1996 detail Bill Clinton teaching Chelsea to drive in the car on the grounds.
The Clintons wanted to get rid of it when Bill's term was over and held an auction for staff. Lawn's $2000 bid won it.
Lawn hoped to give the car to his daughter, but she wanted nothing to do with the crushed velvet seats, hand crank windows and "Clinton For Governor" campaign sticker on the back window,
"She said, 'It looks like an old lady's car!'" Lawn recalls.
The car has sat in Lawn's Gettysburg, Pennsylvania garage for the past 16 years. He's never re-tagged it, so the ownership papers still say Hillary Clinton.
"It's been taking up garage space for all that time, so it's time for someone else to own it."
As for whether the car's value might increase, if he holds out to see if Hillary Clinton becomes the next president, Lawn says he's not willing to bet on that happening.
