Mass shooting in California leaves multiple dead and injured

Police are searching for one to three gunmen believed to be wearing military-style gear after gunfire heard at a social services centre in San Bernardino

At least 14 people were shot and killed in southern California this afternoon after up to three gunman dressed in military-style clothing opened fire at a social services centre. 

None of the gunmen have been apprehended as of 5 p.m. ET. San Bernardino police chief Jarrod Burguan said the suspects were armed with long guns and "came prepared."

Witnesses said workers at the Inland Regional Center locked themselves in their offices when gunfire erupted in the building. 

As It Happens host Carol Off spoke with Sherman Dumas, the lead pastor at the nearby Kingdom Culture Worship Centre, shortly after 4 p.m. ET. 

"Right now, it's an absolute frantic atmosphere as some family members are waiting to hear where their family members are, and how they are doing," Dumas says from the scene outside the centre.

As the manhunt for the suspects goes on, nearby stores, office buildings and at least one school are on lockdown.
