What to be for Halloween? Travel Manitoba suggests 'sexy perogy'
With Halloween just around the corner, it's time to decide on a costume. But if the bed sheet ghost won't cut it this year, Travel Manitoba has got you covered. On its blog, the Crown corporation has come up with a list of 14 Manitoba-inspired costume ideas.
The costume ideas cover a range of categories: wildlife, famous people or characters, Winnipeg icons and the wacky and weird (which is mostly made up of food-inspired costumes). One of the more striking suggestions is the 'Sexy Perogy.'
"It's really just a white bodysuit, getting some nice white fabric and pinching it around the sides in the shape of a perogy with some bacon earrings and an onion hat and heels. The heels is the sexy part!" Kirsten Neil tells As It Happens host Carol Off.
Neil is the social media specialist at Travel Manitoba. She explains many of the costumes have historical significance. For instance, the James Bond costume pays tribute to Sir William Stephenson, the Manitoba-born Second World War spy that inspired the series. The Nutty Club mascot is another favourite.
"The Nutty Club is one of the candy factories in Winnipeg, it's been around for ages and it has a little character on it and he looks like a little peppermint candy," Neil explains.
Other standout suggestions include the the Fred Penner look, which is advertised with the disclaimer "you will be expected to sing The Cat Came Back at least 1,052 times." The 'Slurpee' look is another favourite but according to the blog "becoming Winnipeg's most popular beverage/snack/dessert is no easy task." Neil admits that despite the bitter Manitoba winter, "Winnipeg for some reason is like the Slurpee capital of the world for the last 14 or 15 years running."
After reviewing her options, Neil says she will likely sport the 1999 Winnipeg Pan Am volunteer look which she fondly remembers.
