Windsor nooses are 'hate crime' says union
It's being called a sickening case of workplace harassment and a hate crime. For the third time, a hangman's noose has been found inside Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Windsor assembly plant.
Union officials say the nooses appear to have targeted a black employee. Rob Petroni is the Business Manager for Labourers International Union of North America, which represents the worker.
He tells As It Happens co-host Carol Off, "It's definitely racially motivated and a hate crime."
The first noose was found in the unidentified man's work area last Thursday. The second was left hanging from a golf cart. The third was discovered in a storage area.
The employee is still working, although he's been left shaken. Petroni says, "If he didn't go to work whoever is fashioning these nooses would be winning."
"[I'm] sickened and saddened. You lose a bit of faith in mankind when this happens."
Windsor police have launched an investigation, are reviewing security camera footage and asking anyone with information to come forward.
