Available for rent: entire, tiny Hungarian village
The village of Megyer, Hungary is available to rent. The whole town. It’s home to 18 people now and it’s getting smaller, like many small villages in Hungary. That is the gist of a recent advertisement published on the Hungarian version of Craigslist, where you would normally search apartment rentals.
For roughly $960 per night, renters can invite as many as 38 other people to stay with them. The rental includes the title of deputy mayor (with the ability to make decisions, including changing street names).
The mayor, along with Barbara Balogh, came up with the solution when they were drinking wine in the town’s de facto bar, which is a barn that also doubles as the mayor’s office.
“We all went to sleep, and then the next day, the ad appeared,” Balogh told As It Happens host Carol Off. “Our mayor just liked the idea.”
Aside from the village’s quaint beauty, Balogh explains that Megyer has “one bus stop, and a chicken coop. You can go horseback riding. We’re also pretty famous for our pig killing party, which is a very popular winter entertainment program in Hungary.”
