CO: Happiness and horror, 70 kilometres apart. While officials celebrate the relocation of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, in Gaza, Israeli Defence Forces use tear gas and rguns on Palestian protesters — killing more than 50 people.

JD: Engrossing domestic product. Actor Colm Feore remembers the late Kevin Tierney — whose brainchild, "Bon Cop, Bad Cop" -- became the most successful Canadian film of all time.

CO: A timely interception. A woman carrying a gun is part of a fight in a Florida high school gym. And then the phys. ed. teacher, who played football for the Calgary Stampeders, takes matters into his own hands.

JD: A "don't-display" case. After discovering a time capsule of her great-greatparents' belongs at the Smithsonian Institution, an Inuk woman is calling for those artifacts to be sent home.

CO: Meat and greet. The guests at a five-year-old Newfoundland girl's birthday party are surprised to find it's a carnival of carnivorousness — because young Grace Hookey requested the theme be "salt beef".

JD: Mmmmmmmmm. And...getting his shed together. It's taken years, and thousands of dollars, but a gardener from England has just proven it once again: after hitting 160 kilometres an hour, his shed on wheels is the fastest shed in the world.

Part one: Gaza violence/ US embassy announcement, former Calgary Stampeder disarms woman, fastest shed

Gaza violence

Guest: Refat Al Areer

JD: As Israelis marked an historic event, Palestinians in Gaza were facing the deadliest day in years. Today in Jerusalem, U.S. officials and Israeli politicians unveiled the new U.S. embassy. Just 70 kilometres away, the Gaza-Israel border was a scene of tear gas, gunfire, and pandemonium. Palestinians have been demonstrating there for weeks, protesting Israel's blockade of Gaza. Today, Israeli soldiers fired on the crowd. Since this morning, more than 50 protesters have been killed, more than 2,400 injured, According to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Refat Al Areer was there today. He is a university lecturer at the Islamic University in Gaza City. That is where we reached him.

CO: Mr. Al Areer, you're in the middle of today's protests at the Gaza-Israel border. Can you describe what you saw?

REFAT AL AREER: Today in East Gaza City, tens of thousands of Palestinians were marching — elderly people, women, men, young people and children. And every time Palestinians approached 400 metres away from the fence, they would be shot by Israeli snipers and firing tear gas canisters. As protesters, we don't see the Israeli snipers. They are safe. They are protecting themselves behind bags of sand and everything they have. Every time we hear a shot, somebody falls to the ground and is taken by the Palestinian paramedics.

CO: 52 confirmed killed now. This is early in the day, possibly by later on, that death toll will even rise because I understand many of the wounded are critically wounded. Have you been to the hospitals? Have you seen what's going on there as far as being able to treat people?

RAA: I spent most of my day near the border. And as I told you, Israel claims to be targeting the instigators — those who are throwing stones — but it's not true. In front of me an elderly man was shot in his foot. He was standing by doing nothing. And again, there was breaking news that an Al-Jazeera journalist in Gaza was also shot in his arm. He was clearly marked. He was wearing a helmet that says “TV” or “press”. But again, Israel is randomly and at the same time systematically targeting people of all spectrums and all ages. Again sending a message to the Palestinians that you are not allowed to speak up, you are not allowed to demand your rights.

CO: You mentioned some of the reports that some journalists have been shot. This is not the first time we've covered what's been happening to those clearly marked press who are there, but the Israeli Defense Forces saying that they are dealing with rioters hurling firebombs, explosive devices, burning tires and attempting to start fires in Israel. How do you respond to that?

RAA: First of all, Israel has a problem with the very existence of the Palestinians. If Palestinians use legitimate armed struggle, Israel is going to kill them.

CO: What's the purpose of the burning tires? Can you explain that?

RAA: The first Friday for many people this was supposed to be a festival and where Palestinians gather people. And then all of a sudden, the Israeli snipers started shooting Palestinians. So for the next Friday, they said OK we want to blind these Israeli snipers to prevent them from sniping the protesters. And that is why we have the young people burning the tires. And even when it comes to these stones or the slings, I say that even David's godly sling cannot reach to the other side. But Israel knows that. It knows that these stones cannot reach them. Even if they reach across the border, they will not harm anybody. And this is again proof that Israel wants to cause as much damage as possible.

CO: What do you make of these leaflets that have been dropped in Gaza that this is what apparently they say — they've been scattered all over the ground. “Israel will act against every attempt to damage the security fence or harm IDF soldiers or Israeli civilians.” What do you make of that?

RAA: Well, to Palestinians, these leaflets mean nothing. Palestinians were stepping on these leaflets. This is not meant for poor Palestinians. This is meant for the international community just to tell the world that look at us, we're civilized, we told them to go away before we murder them.

CO: Israel minister Naftali Bennett told Israel Radio that anyone who approached the fence would be considered a terrorist, and dealt with as a terrorist. How close are people going to the fence? At what point do they get shot as they approach the fence?

RAA: Like most of the people, we would be like 200 metres sometimes 300 metres, but many people were shot when they were like 100 metres. You hear a shot, and somebody falls down.

CO: The images we're seeing out of Gaza out of what you're describing, we’re also seeing the images out of Jerusalem, where the new U.S. embassy is opening today. What do you make of the contrast between those two images?

RAA: They show how tragic and comic the situation is. At the same time, it would be really funny if it hadn't been this tragic if Palestinian blood is not being shed. Trump is an idiot. He's insane. Sometimes like he makes you laugh because of how stupid he is. Like the moment when he decided to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel going against international law, going even against United States. And then he tweets that now Jerusalem is off the table — Again proving that America has never been an objective and has never been a neutral broker. So the images show why they were laughing, why Israel was celebrating. While Ivanka Trump was all smiles, Palestinians were weeping. Palestinians were losing their loved ones.

CO: It's quite obvious that the Israeli Defense Force is going to continue to use lethal force on those protesters, on those demonstrations. Do you think it will deter any Palestinians from going back? Will it deter you from going back?

RAA: It will not. Of course, it will not. Definitely, I’ll go back tomorrow. And every time I don't have classes, I should be there because this is for our grandchildren, this is for our children. We need to continue the struggle so that next Palestinian generations and even Israeli generations can live in peace.

JD: Refat Al Areer is one of the Palestinian protesters who witnessed the clashes at the border today. We reached Mr. Al Areer in Gaza City. Earlier today, BBC's "Newshour" program spoke to Sharren Haskel, a member of parliament in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling Likud party. At that time, 37 Palestinian protesters had been confirmed dead — and BBC host Razia Iqbal asked Ms. Haskel for her response to that.

SHARREN HASKEL: So, unfortunately, Palestinian leadership, including Hamas as well, time after time are creating great injustice to their people. Refusing to reconcile, refusing to negotiate, refusing to create peace and stability. And once a year, they're doing these violent riots in the attempt to break the border.

RAZIA IQBAL: They’re unarmed. Sharren Haskel, they’re unarmed. It's the Israeli forces who are armed and shooting at them.

SH: I don’t know if you would say that people who are crossing the borders with knives, with machetes, with fire flying bombs, burning the entire fields from farmers, if that doesn't include arms. People can die from fire. People can die from knives as well. If someone would cross the border to England bearing knives, and Molotov bottles, and fire bombs, I think their authority would treat them quite in a similar manner to what the Israeli forces are treating the perpetrators. So in that sense, unfortunately, Hamas are sending those people straight to the front line, creating great injustice to their people, creating more violent riots.

JD: That was Likud Party member Sharren Haskel, speaking to the BBC's Razia Iqbal earlier today. Since that time, Prime Minister Netanyahu said Israel acted in self-defence by firing at protesters on the border. And a White House spokesperson said that Hamas is to blame. In Jerusalem, Israeli politicians and U.S. officials marked the official opening of the new American Embassy today. It follows a controversial decision by President Donald Trump to relocate the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv. Here is part of what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today, at the ceremony.

BENJAMIN NETANYAHU: What a glorious day. Remember this moment. My friends, this is a great day for Israel. It's a great day for America. But I believe it's also a great day for peace. A peace that is built on lies will crash on the rocks of Middle Eastern realities. You can only build peace on truth. Former Calgary Stampeder disarms woman

Guest: Lin-J Shell

JD: If you’re a CFL fan, you might be familiar with Lin-J Shell from his time as a defensive back. He spent a few years playing with the Toronto Argonauts, then he won a Grey Cup with Stampeders in Calgary. These days, you'll find him in Jacksonville, Florida where he teaches high school phys-ed. Last week, a fight broke out in the school gym — and that's when Mr. Shell says he saw a woman with a gun. Here's what some of the video footage from the brawl sounds like.

JD: Police have since charged a woman with "possession of a firearm on school property". And the former football player Lin-J Shell has been lauded for his "heroics off the field". We reached Mr. Shell in Jacksonville.

CO: Lin-J, our listeners have just heard the audio part of that scene in the gym. But when you look at it, it's quite a free for all. Can you just tell us first of all how did the fight begin?

LIN-J SHELL: There were four men who had just got out of a car that was not supposed to be on campus. So once those four guys entered the gym, I got three other guys to start pushing them towards the back of the gymnasium to try to get them out of the gym. The fourth guy he was still standing behind me, face-to-face with of some students, and that's where the fight is with the last guy and the students.

CO: That was the first fight, but how many fights were active when you were in the middle of all that?

LJS: Quite honestly, about a minimum of five fights. But one of the guys who came into the gym he actually attended school there, so he's one of our students we found out later on. And the three other guys that were with him were not from the school. So you know he does have a couple friends and family at the school. So the students were fighting the guys they didn't know, and apparently, fighting a couple of the other students who knew the student who was there.

CO: Did you notice this car arrive with some people in it?

LJS: Yeah, I usually don't leave the gym, but I was trying to give the exit exams for my students. We were going to do a review, so I just happened to be outside taking my students to the back of the campus. When I was coming back to get the other half of my students, I noticed that the car pulled up. In the fashion in which they pulled up you know they were in a rush. So they pulled up and I looked around a few other vehicles, and I noticed that the four guys had got out of the car and then they ran into the gym. So I ran down to the car, at which point the lady who had the firearm didn't have it at time I confronted her first. We exchanged a few words while I was working my way towards the gym because I knew guys were already in the gym.

CO: And then when did you realize that she might have some other intentions?

LJS: As the students were fighting. Once the fight broke out, there were five fights going on, and I was trying to jump from fight the fight to try to minimize the damage that was going on with the kids fighting. And while I was scanning, I happened to notice that she had something over her hand. So I’m jumping from fight the fight, I’m realizing like she has a bag over her hand. And it kind of caught me off guard. So I broke up one more fight, and I got around to the backside of her seeing that she had this bag on her hand. And that's when I saw that she had a pistol in her hand.

CO: And what went through your mind when you realized that she was carrying a gun?

LJS: Just that everything is really in close vicinity. The kids are all in point-blank range, so it doesn't really matter what calibre gun she has. If the gun goes off, it could hit a kid directly, or it could bounce off the floor.

CO: So what did you do?

LJS: I walked up behind her, grabbed her wrist and held it down. She tried to pull up, and I’m obviously stronger then she is, so she couldn’t really pull her wrist up. I pulled her arm down I locked my hand around the back of her elbow to try to make sure you know she couldn’t bend her arm or spin around in any which way. So keep her hand pointed down, make sure if the gun happens to go off, it goes off into the basketball court because I couldn’t see if her finger was on the trigger or not. And I just kind of forced her back out of the front doors where she came in. And basically just kept saying please don't shoot the kids. Do not shoot the kids. Don't pull this trigger.

CO: When you got her out of the gym then what happened?

LJS: I got her to the grass. As I'm pushing her into the grass, the police officer is running toward the gymnasium. As he's running towards the gymnasium, I’m yelling top him, “she has a gun. She has a gun.” And so he kind of looked startled at first, and I was like, “she has a gun.” And he pulled his service weapon and commanded her to get on the ground. She tried to argue with him a little bit, stating that the gun is in her name. And he laid her down.

CO: Do you know if the gun was loaded?

LJS: Six hollow-point nine millimetre live rounds.

CO: And you know people are calling you a hero for what you did and how you handle that. Do you think through how much worse it could have been had you not been able to do you did?

LJS: I processed that, but it took me a couple days to really process the whole situation because being that I played football my entire life, quick reactions to things is a normal reaction to me. But getting back to actually thinking about the fact that a child could have been shot. Or you know just thinking about all the other situations where people have been shot in schools. It actually kind of brought it to reality that situation really could have of gotten out of hand really fast. But as far as being a hero, no, I don't see myself as any type of hero. If my son was in that situation, I would hope that someone would be you know smart enough or brave enough to go ahead and try to neutralize the situation as well. So I don't think I did anything any different than any other person would do.

CO: Well, not many people are star football players with the CFL. You know you won a Grey Cup with the Calgary Stampeders. And you just mentioned it, do you think that because you're used to acting quickly and seeing six things going on at the same time all over a field, did that help you in that melee?

LJS: Oh most definitely, when you're in half-leap, when situations get out of control really quick, they tend to slow down. So with the adrenaline going, everything kind of slows down and it allows you to think in those situations. Just having the presence of mind to actually understand how many people came into the gym and kind of check from fight to fight. I understood how many people were in the gym that weren’t supposed to be there, and that kind of gave me the mindset to check from fight the fight and see where all the people were try to continuously come up with plans to defuse the situation. So football definitely played a big role in just being able to respond to being under pressure.

CO: Well again, I'm glad you were there. And you are a hero for what you did. And I'm glad you had that quick wit and quick movement to help the kids. Thank you, Lin-J.

LJS: No problem. I hope anybody does that in that situation.

Christine Moore

JD: Complete shock. That's how Christine Moore says she responded to stories that a former soldier was accusing her of sexual misconduct. Last week, retired Corporal Glen Kirkland told the CBC that the NDP MP had abused her power, in pursuing a sexual relationship with him after he testified before one of her parliamentary committees in 2013. Today, Ms. Moore, who has since married and had children, held a press conference in her Quebec riding to respond. She announced plans to sue Mr. Kirkland and three opinion writers, including the CBC's Neil MacDonald. Then, Christine Moore offered a very different story. She described, in often intimate detail, a consensual relationship that she ended after a few months. Ms. Moore spoke only in French. When she was done, reporters wanted to know how the last week had been.

CHRISTINE MOORE: [Speaking: French]

TRANSLATION: It was very difficult this week. It had a considerable impact on my family, on my friends, on my own health. It's difficult. It's difficult for me. It has an effect on me. And what I need right now after this press conference is to spend some time with my family, with my husband, with my children. I have to be able to take advantage of what I have with them and cry.

JD: Then a reporter asked Christine Moore why she thought the accusations were coming out now.

CHRISTINE MOORE: [Speaking: French]

TRANSLATION: I don't understand. I said that I don't understand. I've been trying to understand, but I still don't understand it. It’s so mean as an attack. I just have no way of understanding.

JD: Through translation, that was NDP MP Christine Moore speaking to reporters this afternoon in Abitibi-Temiscamingue, Quebec.

Fastest shed

Guest: Kevin Nicks

JD: It's has an Audi RS4 engine; it boasts 450 horsepower. And last week, Kevin Nicks broke his own land-speed record in it, at the legendary Pendine Sands Racing Club, on the south coast of Wales. But the super-fast vehicle created by Mr. Nicks is probably not what you're picturing — unless you're actually picturing a shed on wheels. We reached Kevin Nicks in Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire.

CO: Kevin, congratulations.

KEVIN NICKS: Thank you very much indeed.

CO: What does it feel like to barrel down the track driving 160 kilometres in a shed?

KN: Before I take anybody in it, they always say to me it's not what I expected. I've driven thousands of cars, and it is by far the most comfortable because you've got so much space around you, it's quiet, it's incredibly fast. The problem I have obviously is aerodynamics because I don't have any. So the acceleration — naught to 80 — is phenomenal. It's like trying to drive through tar the faster you go. And I had to more than double the horsepower to gain an extra 25 miles an hour.

CO: Well, I guess the question is why? Why did you want to have the fastest shed on the road?

KN: The very short story was I had a car that was sat there that I hadn’t used I was going to scrap. I took the front off and used bit on a different car. But it was too good to scrap, so I just decided to do it. And that's what I did.

CO: But, Kevin, why a shed? Lots of people want the fastest thing on the road, but they don't want a shed. What was it about this structure that you needed to make into this speeding thing?

KN: In life, if you do the same thing as everybody else, you just become the same as everybody else. We weren’t all born to be the same, were we?

CO: OK, let's go back to this record-breaking run you had in your shed. You broke the record, but the record was set by you. Is there another fast shed on the road anywhere?

KN: Well, there was one, which is owned by a man called Ed China. And he’s a famous TV guy. But he set a Guinness world record of 58 miles an hour. I didn't know that until I'd nearly finished building mine originally. So I thought oh, I could have that off him. So I actually set the Guinness record at Elvington near York. I did that last year. Which incidentally was exactly the same speed what I’d done along the iconic Pendine Sands.

CO: Pendine Sands is where you did it. What's so special about that place?

KN: In 1927, Malcolm Campbell did 174 miles an hour along the beach. And his son, Donald Campbell, followed in his footsteps with a car and boat called Bluebird. There was also back in the 1920s, a very famous car called Babs. Sadly, he had an accident at Pendine, and he got killed. And they buried the car in the sand, and it stayed buried in the sand for 50 years. And then they dug up just to see if there were some bits they could put in the museum, were stunned with the condition of it and restored it.

CO: What does it mean for you to actually be doing your record-breaking run on Pendine Sands?

KN: To be a tiny part of all that huge fantastic history, you know it is truly amazing. And the recognition that I got for it, I had a message from a school that hold all the original records Malcolm and Donald Campbell congratulating me. And I thought what an honour that is to be recognized. It’s such a magical place.

CO: And was it a magical moment then?

KN: It was yes because I consumed my life rebuilding always this this winter. And to say it was a lot of work was an understatement. But I fitted it, got it in, got it running. My first run to go out there and go over 100 miles an hour, actually, I went out the next day — not many people know this — and I did 105.

CO: You broke your own record again the next day?

KN: Yes.

CO: You’ve just mentioned how much time you spent getting to this point. This has been a labour of love I guess with you and the shed?

KN: It has. A lot of people say how much did it cost? Money doesn't inspire me, and I'm not ruled by money. A lot of the Western world appears to be nowadays. And they’re losing things like pride, respect, you know determination. A lot people just give up.

CO: But how much did it cost you?

KN: I don't know. There's been a figure balanced about in the media here, but I honestly don't know. More than I expected, but it was the time, you know? I used friends’ workshops to do this engine. I could only work there nights and weekends. One particular weekend, I was there eight o'clock in the morning, went home at two o'clock in the morning. I was back down there at eight o'clock in the morning. And when they arrived for work on the Monday morning, I was still there.

CO: But it was all worth it for your magic moment?

KN: Oh yeah, yeah, it's truly amazing.

CO: All right. Well, Kevin, best of luck to you and your shed next weekend. And thanks for telling us about it.

Part two: Producer Kevin Tierney obit, Smithsonian Inuit artifacts

JD: At the top of the 2006 movie "Bon Cop, Bad Cop", a body is found on the border of Ontario and Quebec. Two detectives arrive at the scene — one from Ontario, one from Quebec. That's where the disagreements start.

JD: From the 2006 film "Bon Cop, Bad Cop" — the highest-grossing Canadian film ever made. That film was produced and co-written by Kevin Tierney, a Montreal-based film producer who loved to poke fun at the cultural divide between French and English Canada. Mr. Tierney died of cancer on Saturday. He was 67 years old. Colm Feore starred in "Bon Cop, Bad Cop" as Detective Martin Ward. We reached mr Feore in Stratford, Ontario.

CO: Colm, we just heard a little bit of your performance in “Bon Cop, Bad Cop”. What was it like to work with Kevin Tierney on that film?

COLM FEORE: It was an awful lot of fun. We laughed almost constantly. You know you got to keep in mind that Canadian movies don't have a lot of time, they don’t have a lot of money, they don't have a lot of film. And so preparation is everything. And Kevin was nothing if not prepared. And consequently, everyone onboard was absolutely delightful. And we just got on with it.

CO: Kevin Tierney in an interview some years ago, he said that when he was told the premise of this film, that there would be this body, and the Quebec police and the OPP — Ontario police — would dispute whose Job it was. And it would bring in the whole story of the English and French Canadian divide. He said I can't believe this film hasn't already been made. It was just a logical thing. So did it feel that way? Did you feel that you were touching a nerve and also making people laugh as well?

CF: Well, I've heard some stories. And what I did was I you know I actually passed the script to a policeman — a detective — I knew here in Stratford. And said look, does any of this make any sense to you? He said oh yeah, oh golly! And he told me some stories that we thought might make a very good film for the second one — and I told Kevin this — that basically there are Quebecois criminals who do something bad Quebec, and then drive like crazy to the Ontario border, hoping to be caught by the Ontario cops — because if they're caught by the Quebec cops, all bets are off.

CO: And Kevin Tierney another very funny movie he made — not quite as successful, “French immersion”. About a remote northern Quebec town where “Anglos” are trying to learn French, which is an experience played out by many.

CF: Listen, Kevin always had his fingers on the pulse of what was going on. And you say not quite as successful, it depends on how you look at it. Because if you see any kid who's ever done a French immersion class in this country, he's been forced to watch that film. It's a classic in the genre. My part was — if you remember the politics of the time — he was called Michael Pontificator, I don't think I need to tell you more. And what he did was he spoke his line in English, and then very annoyingly spoke exactly the same line in French. And this he did when asked any question like how's the weather? What are your politics? And what day is it? So you know Kevin knew a good gag when he saw it.

CO: I mean was Kevin was he a “Franco”? Was he an “Anglo”? was he a Quebecker ? Was he a Quebecois? It was always so difficult to figure out what side he was on.

CF: I think that's the beauty of it. I mean I think that he found himself you know a Montrealer. A Montrealer Anglo, could dispute en francais avec the best of them. And knew were the best restaurants were. And indeed, some of our best times were there. And he took on all comers. He wasn't afraid of a fight. And he wasn't afraid of a good idea, even if it was someone else's. Sure, bring that on, let's try it. Is it in French? I'll translate. And he was merciless in his view of both sides of the argument, which I think put him in a very particularly good place to comment. And when I say comment you know to make art about it.

CO: What were his politics? Did he ever discuss that?

CF: No, not with me. We were mostly talking about food, or art, or the next film. You know had it not been for the “Tyrannies” There was a long chunk of my career where I'd never have worked at all. I did for films for him. As a producer, as a director, as a writer/producer, you know it was all Tierney all the time. But the politics didn't really enter into it. I mean he had done a lot of work on Trudeau. I'd played Trudeau. We had lots of talk about there anecdotally. But I think you know he was just someone in the trenches, willing really to take a risk of insulting just about anybody. And he did. He also you know he hung me out to dry a few times. There was a moment in “Bon Cop” where my French was not good. It has to be admitted. The first day of “Bon Cop, Bad Cop”, I could say bonjour and bye bye. And so there was a moment where one of the characters looked at me, and for some reason the co-writer thought was funny. I was dressed in a turtleneck, which in French is a col roule. And so I got this stupid turtleneck on, and I looked like an idiot. And we're in this scene where I'm attacking this guy saying hey, listen mister, you answer our questions. And he says [speaking: French] [translation: Nice collar, my father.] I just didn't get it. My French was not good enough to get it that he was making a joke about priests, which is what all Quebeckers do, right? And so I made a stupid blank face. And Kevin fell off his chair. And I said what's going on? He said well, you weren't fast enough to get that that was the joke. Oh, you got to let me redo do this. I've got to take two. No, no, no, we're moving on. That was terrific. We're going to go with that. I just though oh God! I mean it's funny. I get that it's funny. But boy, I suffered.

CO: But dead at 67. I mean he was such a young man with so much more to contribute. What have we lost in Canada and in the Canadian film industry?

CF: Well, you know an alarmingly talented and dangerous filmmaker, who was prepared to lob grenades at all sides. Who was prepared to say harsh, true things, and let the chips fall where they may, and was prepared to do it in his art. And that loss is incalculable.

CO: Colm, thank you so much for telling us your memories of Kevin Tierney.

CF: It's my pleasure. Thanks for asking.

JD: Common themes for a child's birthday party: princesses; Lego; cartoon characters; dinosaurs. Uncommon themes for a child's birthday party: salt beef. But five-year-old Gracey Hookey from Bonavista, Newfoundland, knew what she wanted. And on "The St. John's Morning Show" today, Grace's mother Roxanne explained how she made the meat magic happen.

ROXANNE HOOKEY: Yeah, I said you know your birthday's coming up, what sort theme would you like to do? Her sisters had done themes for their birthday, like you said, the classics: princesses and whatnot, and she said she wanted a salt meat party.

HOST: So where did that come from? I mean is she like a salt meat freak? Like she's into it big time?

RH: Oh yes, she loves salt meat. Like any time there’s cooked dinner on the go, or she walks into her Nan’s house while Nan is cooking dinner or even a pot of soup and she smells salt meat, she knows instantly.

HOST: So as a mom, I imagine this would be a bit of a challenge. How do you realize this vision for a salt meat themed birthday party?

RH: I didn't know at first. I said to my husband my gosh, what are we going to do to make this salt meat birthday party come to life? And so we decided to have a potluck with, of course, salt meat on the menu. I messaged a friend of mine who decorates cakes, and asked can you make me a salt meat cake? So that was the first request she’s had for one, so she really did an excellent job. We had some salt beef buckets for decorations that my sister wrangled up for me. And that’s how we did it.

HOST: And just to be clear, was there any actual meat in the cake?

RH: No. she was very specific. She didn't actually want salt meat in her cake. She wanted vanilla. She is a totally different little girl. She’s got her own mind, her own personality, when something is in her head she sticks with it and goes with it. So when she said she wanted a salt meat party, I knew there was no turning back.

JD: Roxanne Hookey on "The St John's Morning Show" earlier today. Ms. Hookey threw her daughter, Grace, a salt meat-themed birthday party, at Grace’s request.

Smithsonian Inuit artifacts

Guest: Manitok Thompson

JD: Thanks to her mother's constant storytelling, Manitok Thompson has always known a lot about her great-grandparents. What she didn't know was that many of their possessions had been carefully preserved for generations — at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. This month, she and three other Inuit women were able to travel to the Institution to see those items for themselves. Now, they're calling for those artifacts to be returned to Canada. Manitok Thompson is originally from Coral Harbour, Nunavut. We reached her today in Carlton Place, Ontario.

CO: Manitok, what did you think when you learned these items — these things that had belonged to your great grandparents — were housed at the Smithsonian Institution?

MANITOK THOMPSON: It was emotional for me because my mother remembers them being taken. And she used to say they’re somewhere in America. She remembers my great grandparents talking about the non-Aboriginals — the British — taking their stuff and taking them with them when they went on their way.

CO: And went when they went on their way, who were these British explorers or British people who took your great grandparents possessions?

MT: There were actually quite a few British people that came to their area looking for the Franklin ship. And my great grandparents took care of them, and clothed them, and hunted for them, and traveled with them with their dog teams.

CO: You know there are many who say that men on those two boats would have survived if they had turned to the Inuit for help. But they didn't, did they?

MT: No. Well, the people that went to look for them survived because they lived with us — they lived with the Inuit. And they survived. And actually, my mom used to say that one of the men loved his caribou clothing so much, he wore it back on the ship and back to England.

CO: But those aren't the only things they took. What else did the British…

MT: They took a lot of stuff. And when I was at the museum, I saw lots of stuff. These were not only from my group of people, but also from other groups of Inuit across the territory. So there were sewing kits, and harpoons, pots and pans, their everyday stuff were taken.

CO: You had been invited to the Smithsonian is having this exhibition; they wanted to see if there were any descendants of those whose objects had been. And so what was it like to see, to touch things that your great grandmother and great grandfather had?

MT: It was just amazing. I know all their names, and to see the actual clothing that they wore, the hunting equipment that they had, I just started crying because my mom used to talk about this so much, you know? Of the times they went looking for the Franklin ship, what they saw on that trip. And in one case, they saw a human shoulder blade. And the letter that was with that said, “We’re starving. And we’re eating each other now.” These are oral history that were passed down from my mother.

CO: You’re talking about this is we understand the final stretch of time for the men on the Franklin expedition. There was cannibalism.

MT: That’s right. And at one point, somebody thought that the Inuit ate them. But no, we had enough food to eat.

CO: Because you knew how to get it, and they did because they didn't talk to you about it.

MT: No, but it’s our side of the story. And not enough credit has been given to the Inuit that helped the explorers looking for the ship.

CO: One of the parts of the exhibit is just extraordinary. There are plaster moulds of the faces of the people they had met, including your great grandparents. You're actually looking at a mold of their faces.

MT: That's when I broke down. That's when I totally broke down. I saw the plaster molds of their faces — of my great grandfather and my great grandmother. When we went to the storage room and the guys started pulling the door with my great grandparents could have been her caribou baby caring parka, it seemed like I heard in my bones we have to come home now. It's about time.

CO: They were speaking to you.

MT: I just seemed to have that connection just for a few seconds.

CO: But now what you're thinking is that you need to hear that. You need to fulfill their those wishes that you heard from them when you were in that room.

MT: Yeah, exactly. I want to bring them to the Heritage Centre in Nunavut, where they can at least put them on Canadian soil.

CO: What are the chances that will happen?

MT: I'm not sure. I think it will happen after I'm gone. I'm not sure. It seems to take a long, long time. But I wish they had some kind of an exhibition that went touring up to our territory, so that our young people can get a boost in their morale. It would be amazing. I think it would finally put a closer to my mom saying they're somewhere in America. And know we know where they are.

CO: Manitok, I hope they come home. I hope you can answer the spirit of your great grandparents, and heed that. But meanwhile, I really appreciate speaking with you. Thank you.

MT: Thank you, Carol.

Margot Kidder obit

MARGOT KIDDER: What's your background? Where do you hail from?

CHRISTOPHER REEVE: Well, it’s kind of hard to explain actually. See I'm from… well, pretty far away — another galaxy, as a matter of fact. I come from a planet called Krypton.

MK: Huh?

CHRISTOPHER REEVE: Krypton.

MK: Oh, Krypton! With a cri?

JD: You may recognize that scene from 1978's "Superman" — in which Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane interviews the Man of Steel for the first time, before he literally sweeps her off her feet. And you could say the role Lois did the same for the career of Margot Kidder — catapulting her to worldwide recognition. A level of fame, as you'll hear in a minute, with which she never grew comfortable. But by that point, Ms. Kidder was already an award-winning actor with a string of notable performances to her credit, including the Norman Jewison comedy Gaily, Gaily, and 1974's A Quiet Day in Belfast — for which she won a Canadian Film Award for Best Actress. Margot Kidder died yesterday. She was 69 years old. In the years following the "Superman" franchise, Ms. Kidder's big sceen fame diminished — although she continued to appear in films and TV, even after a car crash in 1990. And after a highly-publicized breakdown in 1996, she became an advocate for mental illness awareness, particularly bi-polar disorder. She became a notable political activist, campaigning for abortion rights, the abolition of the death penalty, as well as anti-war and environmental causes. But thirty years ago, Margot Kidder reflected on her Canadian origins — far from the glitz of Tinsel Town. Back in 1988, the CBC's Peter Gzowski caught up with her in the town wherein she was born: Yellowknife. And she began by telling him how her father ended up there in the first place.

MK: He was a miner, and a prospected, and he started the phone company, and was a fireman. In those days you know when there were very few people here and not much of a town, everybody sort of chipped in and did everything. When I'd ask Daddy how they got the phone company started, he said, “Hell, you just stop some on the street and say here, Joe, help me with this pole. And up would go the pole. And you’d you know travel on down the line. And my mommy started the radio station.

PETER GZOWSKI: Really?

MK: Yeah.

PG: Did a good job, didn’t she?

MK: And in the phone company. We lived above the phone company at one point when we moved from the caboose. And they'd have poetry readings, and Shakespeare, and shows would be shipped out from CBC in Ottawa I guess to put on the air, and fiddlers, and all sorts of things.

PG: So how old were you really when you left?

MK: Four.

PG: So you have some memory.

MK: Pretty vague. You know four-year-old dream-like kind of memories. And stories from Daddy and Mommy, and I don't know where the memory is at this point.

PG: Oh, and where it’s been implanted by what they’ve told you about when you were little.

MK: I mean I do remember. We had a dog named Chimeo, who was half husky, half wolf. And Mommy had nailed a box to the toboggan. So Chimeo was hooked up, and Johnny and I were put in the box and pulled around town by Chimeo so Mom could have her hands free.

PG: Oh yeah?

PG: They're really proud of you here you. As you know, there's Lois Lane here, right? What do you make of that?

MK: So I decided four or five years ago I didn't want to be famous anymore. But it doesn't work that way, you know? Up here it's fine; everyone's so nice and polite. I was at a drum dance last night, and suddenly all the young kids were coming over and eyeing me suspiciously going you don't look like Lois Lane at all. She had black hair. And can you fly? And would you sign this autograph. And that was the most sort of attention in a huge way that I'd gotten. Although people you know sort of pat me on back.

PG: Tell me about where an actress comes from? Where you start fantasizing being an actress?

MK: I think it's from being up in a place like this. Look at the characters up here. There's an imagination that flows. And as as a young girl with not much around, I read voraciously, and I think put myself in every character in every book.

PG: Could you try it out anywhere? Could you go put on mommy's dresses?

MK: No, I just had an extraordinary fantasy life, and lived in it a great deal of the time.

Part three: ‘60’s Scoop deal, “not criminally responsible” verdict

‘60’s Scoop deal

Guest: Raven Sinclair

JD: There may be a settlement — but there's not agreement. On Friday night, a judge approved a settlement deal for survivors of the Sixties Scoop. As you heard on this program on Friday, some survivors aren't happy with the terms of the deal, particularly Metis, who are excluded. Under this deal, First Nations and Inuit children who were taken from their families will each be entitled to up to 50 thousand dollars of compensation. Fifty million dollars will go to create an Indigenous healing foundation. Raven Sinclair and her siblings were taken from their family in 1965. Ms. Sinclair is now a professor at the University of Regina's Saskatoon campus. And we reached her in Saskatoon.

CO: Professor Sinclair, why are you supporting this settlement deal?

RAVEN SINCLAIR: I've been asked that question a lot, Carol. And my response that you know is most comfortable for me is that to say that I'm in favour or opposed isn't entirely accurate. I think my response is a little more nuanced than that. I think that because I'm quite familiar with the case and how it was won, and the reality that the lead plaintiff, when the federal government wanted to settle, she insisted that it be a national settlement. You know that's pretty rare I think that that occurs. You know and along with the national settlement was the inclusion of a healing foundation. And I'm very much in favour of a healing foundation. I think that there are so many survivors of the child welfare system — the Sixties Scoop — who really need support and services accessible to them as well.

CO: I just wanted to clarify that, because we mentioned in the introduction about the Indigenous healing foundation. What is it about that. That's part of the agreement, along with cash money to survivors of 60 scoops. But what is the importance of this foundation?

RS: Well, you know it hasn't been created yet. It's part of the settlement. But I know that's sort of some of the guiding principles around it would be that it is primarily survivor-created and run. And it sort of opens the door to all sorts of you know potential programs such as language classes, therapeutic services, cultural programs. All these are really important.

CO: Do you mind if I ask you what happened to you? What your experience was with what they call the Sixties Scoop?

RS: Well, in a nutshell, I know that me and my siblings were all apprehended in 1965. And I didn't see my family for another 22 years. And you know it really served to destroy my family at a really fundamental level. It tore us all apart. My experience in foster care was horrific. My experience in my adoptive home was much different. I mean I love my family. I had lots of advantages. But as a non-Indigenous person in a very white sort of milieu in school you know social in my social context, I experienced a tremendous level of bullying and racism and ostracism and discrimination.

CO: How old were you when you were taken away from your parents and your family?

RS: I was four. So I have you know I have good memories — strong memories — of my time with my family. And here's the irony: I know that the child welfare system is supposed to intervene when there are problems. In my life, it was only when I was taken away that the problems started.

CO: Your story played out over just so many thousands of others who were taken from their families. It's understandable why there are those who say no, this is not enough. We can't accept a settlement where you give us fifty thousand dollars, set up a foundation and say go away. It just it doesn't seem fair to them. Do you understand where they're coming from?

RS: Oh, I sure do. And you know I have those thoughts myself. But those thoughts that I have that you know how do we apply a number to cultural loss? And you know it's difficult to quantify that. But it's tempered by what I know about the case and the hard won victory that it was. And the legal system is not about compassion. And you know when they make the determination about dollar amounts for cultural loss they look at other class action suits. And this is the fourth highest settlement in class action history in Canada. And so you know it's not going to satisfy everybody. My concern though is you know if this settlement is not approved — and there's still another hearing in Ontario at the end of the month — you know in Saskatchewan, I know that the papers were filed, but the case has not been certified. And you know the Ontario case took four years to get certified and another four years to get to that decision. That's eight years. That's a long time. And who's to say that we would even get to the certification point?

CO: I'm just thinking about that 4-year-old-girl in 1965, who was taken away from her family and her siblings. Just let that settle for a moment and think what that would be like. What could Canadian law and Canadian society do to anyway make that up to you?

RS: Reform the child welfare system because there's such a disproportionate number of Indigenous children in care. And you know I know that. You know as families, we have to be accountable. But if the system is operating in a way that puts us at a disadvantage at every turn, then the system needs to be changed. You know in terms of my 4-year-old self, you know I had to do the work to recover from that, which meant years of therapy and counselling and group work and all those sorts of recovery models. It wasn't easy. It was very, very difficult. But you know I survived. And I don't know if there's anything that can be done to redress that. I do think that a settlement offer on the part of the federal government and you know, hopefully, down the road the provincial governments. And apologies it has an impact. It has an impact on me because it acknowledges that this was not right. And to me, it's a measure of you know good faith that there is willingness there to acknowledge wrongdoing and then move ahead in a way that's going to be more equitable.

CO: Professor Sinclair, I really appreciate speaking with you. Thank you.

RS: Thank you.

Salma Hayek at Cannes

JD: This weekend, 86 female filmmakers stood silently on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. They were calling attention to the lack of female directors in the festival's history, and the need for more equality in the movie industry in general. Among them was Mexican actress and producer Salma Hayek. In an op-ed last December, Ms. Hayek accused disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein of threatening to break her kneecaps, after she rebuffed his advances. Mr. Weinstein denies those allegations. And yesterday, at a "Women in Motion" talk, Ms. Hayek directed some advice at men in film. Here she is, responding to a question about what she does to achieve equal pay.

SALMA HAYEK: I'm not even asking for equal yet because they have until 2020. That is still a bit of a struggle because you know what happens that the movie cannot get done if there were to pay you what they’re paying the guys, in some cases, the movie doesn't get done. Because they were getting paid so much that if they had to take that kid to consideration, you might kill the film. We need to all start adjusting and work together. But also the actors have to work together because if the main actors are asking for such big numbers that part of it belonging to the women and in the past it was never given. And the movie doesn't get done because they cannot pay the actors what they were making. And what the actors that were inflated were making. It's not just the producers. The actors have to say Okay, Okay, time's up. I had a good run, but now it's time to also be generous with the actresses in the films. Because I also feel for the producers because I'm a producer too. The budget for above the line it's 10 million dollars. The actor has to understand that if he's making 9.7 million, it’s going to be hard for equality and equal payment. We all have to be part of the adjustment. That's one idea. I’m going to be hated for it. I hope I can get a job.

JD: Producer and actress Salma Hayek, suggesting that male actors should be willing to take pay cuts for the sake of equality, during a talk at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Not criminally responsible” verdict

Guest: Nader Hasan

JD: Terrifying it was – Terror it was not. Today, a man who attacked soldiers at a military recruitment centre in Toronto was acquitted of terror charges. Ayanle Hassan Ali had been accused of stabbing three soldiers with a kitchen knife in May of 2016. The soldiers suffered minor injuries. Mr. Ali was also found not criminally responsible on charges of assault and attempted murder, due to mental illness. Nader Hasan was on Mr. Ali's defence team. We reached Mr. Hasan in Toronto.

CO: Mr. Hasan, there are a number of important parts to this verdict. But I want to ask you, first of all, why was your client acquitted of the charges of terrorism?

NADER HASAN: Well, because the Crown engaged in what I would describe as overcharging. Mr. Ali is not a criminal, although he did a terrible thing. He's not a criminal, and he's certainly not a terrorist. But the Crown charged him with a very serious provision under the Criminal Code under the Terrorism provisions. They charged him with committing indictable offenses for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group. But there's no connection between our client and any terrorist group out there. But then the Crown says no, there isn't. But Mr. Ali committed these acts for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group of one — that group being himself.

COP: But I mean he did, according to the Criminal Code definition of terrorism, it's politically, or religiously, or ideologically motivated violence or intimidation. Mr. Ali — your client — did see soldiers as legitimate targets, and he believed that they were so because Canada is active militarily in Muslim countries. So why is that a stretch for him to have been charged with terrorism?

NH: Yeah, I mean there are two separate issues here. One is whether or not you can commit an act of terrorism for a terrorist group of one? And he was acquitted on that provision. On the other part of it, there's no doubt that he appeared to be acting with a sense of ideological motivation. But the evidence before the court was clear that Mr. Ali suffered from serious mental illness — schizophrenia. And that mental illness was active at the time of the incident. And the doctors who testified — both our expert and the Crown expert — testified that you can't separate the overt religiosity and ideology from the mental illness. And that's not so unusual that you have someone who is mentally ill who clings to religion to provide answers.

CO: But the Crown agreed with you about that that he was not criminally responsible. But they wanted — this is key to it — they wanted the not criminally responsible part not to apply to the terror offenses. Why is that?

NH: Well, they wanted the not criminally responsible to apply to the entire indictment — every offense charged. We wanted an acquittal on terrorism, and for him to be found not criminally responsible on the underlying offenses. And ultimately Justice MacDonnell agreed with our approach.

CO: But why was that important? Just maybe explain why?

NH: Why was that important? I think that's a fair question. It's important for a couple of reasons. One is a point of principle. There is tremendous stigma attached to labeling someone a terrorist. And we don't think that the Crown could satisfy the onus of showing that he is a terrorist. So that was important from the point of principle. In addition, no one has ever been found not criminally responsible in relation to terrorism, and so there is concern about perhaps how Mr. Ali will be treated before the Ontario Review Board if he's found NCAR on terrorism, rather than on the more traditional criminal code offenses.

CO: Does this ruling on the part of Judge MacDonnell, does that limit the scope of terrorism charges? Does it change anything about the way that the crown might approach terrorism charges again?

NH: I mean I hope it leads to a conversation about how the Crown uses and the police use these terrorism provisions. We know we have a very serious attack that takes place in a Quebec mosque, killing a number of people. For whatever reason, the Crown chose not to label that as terrorism. More recently in Toronto, we have that vicious van attack done for an ideological purpose. The Crown has chosen not to call that terrorism. And then we have Mr. Ali, who suffered from tremendous mental illness, and who is injured a couple of people in 2016. And the Crown chose to label that as terrorism. It's important that the Crown not to be seen as engaging in double standards. And it's important that we as Canadians have an understanding as to what is terrorism and how these criminal code provisions ought to be used in law enforcement.

CO: I’ll just point out we don't yet know the motives necessarily for that van attack. But I get your point. Just finally, what is next for Mr. Ali? Is the Crown going to appeal? Or do you think from here it will be regarded that he must be treated for his mental illnesses?

NH: Well, I don't know if the crown is going to appeal. They haven't told me yet. Mr. Ali has been found not criminally responsible. He will be before the Ontario Review Board. The Ontario Review Board will have to craft a disposition. Meaning they'll have to determine the extent of his treatment and what his current detention and treatment order will look like. He will be in a what's called a medium-secure facility at St. Joseph's Health Centre, which is where he's been since 2016. So he will be in custody, but rightfully so, he will be in custody in a hospital — in a psychiatric facility — where he'll get the treatment he deserves.

CO: We will leave it there, Mr. Hasan. Thank you.

PEI rugby death

JD: Students and staff at a high school in Montague, Prince Edward Island, are in mourning this week, after the tragic death of one of the members of their school's rugby team. Brodie McCarthy was a Grade 12 student. He suffered a head injury, in what the school is calling a "freak accident" during a rugby game on Friday. He was transported to a hospital in Moncton, New Brunswick. He underwent brain surgery. Yesterday, Brodie's parents decided to take him off life support — after a CAT scan revealed he had no brain activity. They chose to donate his organs, as he is said to have wanted. Seana Evans-Renaud is the principal at Montague High School. Earlier today, she spoke to Norma Lee MacLeod, host of “Maritime Noon”. Here is part of their conversation.

SEANA EVANS-RENAUD: We opened our school on Saturday afternoon, and the students came in droves. There were a lot of tears, but I think that we were able to give each other support by being here together at the school. And we had counsellors on hand as well, as we do today. We have a team of counsellors available. And just going to students and students are coming to us. We're receiving some phone calls from parents, indicating that their son or daughter is having a difficult time. And so we're seeking them out and trying to give them support. But we're a grieving school right now and will be for quite a while.

NORMA LEE MACLEOD: What do you know about the accident that caused this injury?

SER: I do know that it was a regular rugby play. There was nothing remarkable about it. And there was nothing untoward about it. It was a normal rugby play.

NLM And was Brodie taken off the field hurt? Or how did he come off the field?

SER: He called for a substitute himself, and came off the field. And the coach asked him several questions. He was coherent, he was able to answer all the questions that were asked of him, and then the coach asked him to sit on the ground by the sidelines. And it was there that he collapsed. And the ambulance was called, and he was taken to hospital.

NLM: So he was able to get off the field under his own power?

SER: Absolutely.

NLM: You say that the Rugby play was unremarkable, so really does anybody understand what happened out there?

SER: No, they don't.

NLM: And do you know whether there will be some kind of investigation or inquiry into the play?

SER: At this point, I have no idea. I haven't heard that. So that would be up to the school athletic association I would imagine.

JD: That was Seana Evans-Renaud, the principal at Montague High School — where a Grade 12 student recently died after suffering a rugby-related brain injury. A Go Fund Me page is raising money for Brodie McCarthy's family. So far, it's raised more than 12-thousand dollars.

MB night hunting ban

JD: He has called it, quote, "inhumane" — and has warned it was leading to a race war with some Indigenous hunters. Manitoba premier Brian Pallister has promised to ban the use of spotlights during hunting, and plans to introduce a bill this week. Elissa Gabriel is an Indigenous hunter who hunts at night to provide for her family. She spoke to Marcy Markusa, host of "Information Radio", about the proposed ban.

ELISSA GABRIEL: I think that he's kind of like stepping over the lines with our treaty rights. And that's also stepping on the lines of like how we provide for our families. Different people provide for their families differently. I provide mine right from the land. It’s organic, and it's healthy for me and my children.

MARCY MARKUSA: And what's the value of hunting at night for your family?

EG: During open season, there's usually non-native hunters around in Crown land, and there is usually not enough space for us. So we give the non-natives a chance to hunt at day time, and we go hunting at night time. And it's completely safe.

MM: When we say spotlight, where is the light? Does it move with you?

EG: It’s a portable spotlight that we hold on when we sit on the quad. Then, we have to make sure that the animal is the animal that were trying to shoot. We don't shoot anybody's cattle because you know sometimes cattle just break away from the fence line. We have to make sure that the animal is moving. We just got to make sure and not make studying reactions. We just don't go out shooting at anything and at any anybody or anybody else’s land. We respect people's land.

MM: Some Indigenous leaders are agreeing with the ban.

EG: Do those Indigenous people hunt to provide for their families like the way we do? Because we're on our last bag of moose meat, and we have to consider going hunting maybe four-five hours up north for the moose. But for the deer, we use it for ground meat. And we use that ground meat like practically every week. So you know like some of the Indigenous leaders they have to consider that too because you know they don't own the day and night. Night hunting is not inhumane. Inhumane is making us go to the grocery store and buy junk food. Inhumane is what's happening to the murdered and missing Indigenous woman. Inhumane is what happened to Tina Fontaine.
