Part One

Texas shooting: nearby pastor
Twenty-six people in the congregation of the First Baptist Church in a small Texas community are dead, after a gunman walks into the Sunday service and starts shooting. Mike Clements is the pastor of a nearby church. He knew many of the victims.

Joaquin Castro is a Democratic Congressman for Texas. He grew up near Sutherland Springs. 

Côte-des-Neiges mayor-elect on Montreal's first female mayor-elect: 
Montreal voters chose Valérie Plante over incumbent Denis Coderre yesterday — making her the first woman to be elected mayor in the city's history. And the mayor-elect will be joined at City Hall will by many of her Projet Montreal party's councillors, like Sue Montgomery, the Mayor-elect of Côte-des-Neiges and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

One police officer is dead in Abbotsford, BC. after a shootout. And police say a suspect is in custody. Henry Braun is the mayor of Abbotsford.

Manus Island refugee
After four years in the Manus Island detention center, Amir Taghinia has made it to Canada — but the refugee worries about the increasingly desperate situation for the friends he left behind. 

No-fly list: parent 
Every time they go to the airport, their kids have security trouble. It's not the kids' fault — it's because their names match the names of people on Canada's no-fly list. So today, 20 families gathered on Parliament Hill to ask Ottawa to finally do something about it.

Within the Paradise Papers is a story of a Montreal law firm that spent 14 years helping to delay legislation on closing offshore tax loopholes. Former NDP MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis blames successive federal governments for what she calls "legalized tax evasion."

Multiple sclerosis patient seeks housemate
A 75-year-old Cape Breton man lives with multiple sclerosis, but has no intention of moving out of his house. Instead, he'd like someone to move in  — so he's taken to the Internet to find a farmer, care worker, tradesperson and roommate, all in one.
