Episode Transcript

Part One

Wet'suwet'en latest
After several arrests at the blockade of a British Columbia pipeline project, demonstrators prepare for the RCMP's next advance into the traditional Indigenous territory.

Coronavirus: Trenton couple
Getting out of China was tricky, but a Montreal family is now back in Canada — and back in quarantine with their two children on a military base.

McMaster 1917 map
The First World War looms large at Sunday night's Oscars, and 1917 is one of the favourites. Hear why a Canadian map specialist will be keeping a close eye on the action.

Part Two

Carol Shields prize
Despite the wealth of worthy contenders, women writers take home far fewer literary prizes than male authors. But the creators of a new Canadian award with a big prize attached aim to balance the scales.

Russian journalist
Russian journalist Elena Milashina says after she was violently attacked inside a hotel lobby in Chechnya, she still headed to court to cover a trial — and carried on doing defiant interviews with media outlets like this one.

Part Three

B.C. judge retires
Tom Gove is hanging up his gavel. The British Columbia judge has served his last day on the bench. As a lawyer, he specialized in child welfare cases. As a judge, he presided over the inquiry into child protection that bears his name. He looks back at the changes he saw in his courtroom over the decades.

Vatican homeless shelter
Pope Francis has converted a palace in the Vatican into a homeless shelter. And it's already housing dozens of people in need. But that's not sitting well with some citizens of Rome, whose hopes for the property were more economic than ecumenical.
