Full Episode Transcript

Part One

Germany hack
A huge hack puts the personal information of hundreds of German politicians online — including our guest, who details the details that were revealed.

Paul Whelan charged
Russia charges a Canadian national and former U.S. marine with espionage — but a former CIA station chief in Moscow says that's more a strategic move than a security measure.

Andreescu win
18-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu went into a New Zealand tennis tournament ranked 152nd in the world — and today, she beat the great Venus Williams.

Part Two

China delegation
Ottawa is putting pressure on Beijing to release two detained Canadians — but a senator says that won't stop his parliamentary group from getting on a plane to China.

Early women's writing
Centuries ago, letters, poems, and other texts written by women were ignored and dismissed. Now, with the help of a two-million-dollar grant, our guest is leading a project to rescue those lost writings from oblivion.

Jewellery mix-up
A hidden gem is a good thing. But in this case, it's a nightmare. Because it was 50,000 bucks' worth of gems, hidden in a bag of clothes — that their owner unwittingly donated to charity.

Part Three

Encore: The As it Happened Archives - The Next Generation Edition

The show director is Kevin Ball. The writer is Chris Howden.

John Perry is our senior producer. And the Executive Producer of As It Happens is Robin Smythe.

We'd also like to thank some other people who helped us out this week:

Mary-Catherine McIntosh in Halifax
Susan McKenzie in Montreal
Kristin Nelson in Ottawa
Meagan Fitzpatrick in Washington, D.C.
Keith Hart at Radio Archives, Rebecca Efrat in the Music Library, Varad Mehta, Tomy Thomas and Luke Williams — all in Toronto
Suzanne Dufresne in Winnipeg
Michael O'Halloran in Calgary, and
Anne Penman in Vancouver.

We also have to say a fond farewell to the great Imogen Birchard. During her time here, she's been one of the most inventive, thoughtful, persistent, and fearless producers to work on As It Happens. She's helped us get stories about everything from the grinding friction of American politics to...the grinding friction of female Japanese snow monkeys who hump the backs of deer.

She covers everything, with characteristic sensitivity and intelligence. Except for bagels — which she covers with cream cheese, on the outside. It's a huge flaw. But it seems to be her only one. Imogen, we'll miss you, and we wish you happiness and further success on the next part of your journey.

As It Happens will be back again on Monday. Good night, and good weekend.
