As It Happens: Friday Edition
Part One
RCMP verdict
A New Brunswick judge rules the RCMP failed to provide adequate equipment and training to the officers killed during the rampage in Moncton — and the widow of one of those officers says she knew that from the start.
Flames stadium: Nenshi
Amid the controversy over the future home of the Calgary Flames, the city's mayor has come under fire — and tonight, Naheed Nenshi tells us where he stands on where they'll skate.
Bere Island lottery update
They've come forth — but she's still not forthcoming. Like she was last time we spoke with her, Mary Murphy's still full of beans — but even after the winners of the lottery ticket sold on a tiny Irish island have come forward, she won't spill them.
Part Two
Catalonia vote
On Sunday, Catalonia plans to vote on whether to become independent, but Spain's government is voting "no" on even having the referendum — to the consternation of our guest, a Catalan mayor.
Dirty Chinese restaurant game
An Ontario company has produced a video game in which, among other things, you chase dogs and cats with a cleaver. It's called that game "satire." But it's also called the game "Dirty Chinese Restaurant." So lots of people — including our guest — are calling the company out and calling the game racist.
Part Three
Banned Book Week repeat
Mariko Tamaki is the author of "This One Summer" — and according to the American Library Association's Banned Books Coalition, that book was one of the most frequently challenged titles of 2016. We revisit Carol's conversation with Tamaki in honour of Banned Book Week.
Drunk paddle boater
Back in 2010, George Zalewa had his driver's license suspended for paddle-boating with a glass of whiskey in hand — so he's glad to hear the feds are proposing to get rid of that offence entirely.
