As It Happens

As It Happens, Friday Edition

Friday March 25th, 2016

Part One

French Senator on raids
In raids conducted in four different countries in Europe, police arrest several suspects with possible connections to terrorism — and raise the spectre of a continent-wide network.

Ellen Seligman obit
Over her decades-long career, the late editor and publisher Ellen Seligman was a tireless champion of Canadian literature whose successes could fill a library.

Squirrel bridge
Dutch authorities are angry, and probably a little hurt, when they build a very expensive bridge over a highway to keep squirrels from getting squashed and then the ungrateful rodents refuse to use it.

Part Two

School atheist books
When the folks from Gideons are allowed to distribute Bibles to Colorado schoolchildren, atheist groups are righteously indignant -- and distribute their own reading materials to students.

Reading: The Selfish Giant
Our annual Easter reading of Oscar Wilde's The Selfish Giant — about a man big enough to understand it's more important to let people in than to keep them out.

Part Three

Church abuse settlement
In 1962, a psychiatrist said Father Michael Cody was dangerous. That he should be removed from parish work. He wasn't and he went on to abuse dozens of girls. This week, eight women settled with the Seattle archdiocese where the late priest worked.

Encore: Andy Barrie film: The Voice
An encore presentation of Carol's conversation with former CBC host Andy Barrie, and the filmmaker who made a documentary about how Deep Brain Stimulation affected his Parkinson's.
